The moment of victory or defeat is the culmination of weeks, months, or even years of preparation. At the 2024 Summer Olympics, we witnessed the motivational tales of competitors including Vinesh Phogat, American gymnast Simone Biles, and Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nasim. These athletes have dedicated themselves to this singular moment, and their triumph shines a light on all those who have supported them along the way. Even those who are more distantly connected to their success bask in the glow of their victory, while others seek to share a piece of that spotlight before it moves on to another deserving individual.

I’m thinking about all the people who failed at that very time, falling short by millimeters or more. Consequently, nobody paid them any mind. Did their entire trajectory fall apart?

The ability to step back and assess the situation objectively determines whether you’re winning or losing in the here and now. A moment of respite for contemplation, restoration, or recuperation. Some people may need days, weeks, months, or even years to complete this journey. The time it takes for an individual to evolve, whether intentionally or because of external forces, is the determining factor.

How does one evolve? The answer to “how to evolve” was almost revealed in a narrative told by an astute individual. A fascinating store with the statement ‘Everything is available here’ caught the attention of a man who was strolling down unfamiliar streets. Excited to peruse the wares, he stepped into the store and discovered ‘God’ positioned behind the register. He declared, “Dear God, what can I obtain here?” in a state of utter astonishment and curiosity. God said, “Anything that you desire will be granted to you.” He addressed the matter by saying, “I seek good health, happiness, and inner peace.” Smiling, God proclaimed, “Hey! I failed to address one requirement. I just offer seeds in my store; I don’t provide finished products. You can plant those seeds and tend to them properly; I’ll see to the rest. But it’s up to you to decide which seeds to use and when and how to water them. Then I will be able to attend to everything else.

We have the power to decide whether to evolve. We have the choice to either remain grounded after succeeding or learn from what appeared to be a failure. We have the option to focus on certain priorities and let go of others. We can also choose to embrace the consequences of our decisions and adjust to make better choices in the future.

As the 2024 Summer Olympics near their conclusion and the world reflects on its experiences, lets remember to be open-minded about the decisions we make in life and empathetic of the choices made by others. The answers that shape our identities are derived from the choices we make about the people and situations we let in and the ones we let go of.

When each moment unfolds and each person connects, will the world flourish from its evolutionary seeds to a place of boundless curiosity and diminished judgment.
